Description

Group of one sheet correspondence on tan lined Knights of Columbus letterhead with envelope. Letter has writing on both sides. Dated Dec, 22 1917. Handwritten letter in black ink about not having to drill until after Christmas, the weather, and two men from Grayslake. Tan envelope with flag logo in the left corner addressed to "Miss Josephine Raupp; Arlington Heights, Illinois." Postmarked Dec. 23, 1917 from Houston, TX Logan Branch. Envelope has cut-out area where stamp should be. I am all well and hope the same of you. I received your most welcome letter and package yesterday. I thank you very much. I was busy today reading the paper you sent me. We didn't drill this afternoon so I had time to read and eat. We won't drill till after xmas so we will have a rest. We are drilling always the same- squad right and squad left. We are having pretty nice weather the past few days. It is nice and warm. We sure had some awful weather the last week. Always raining and raining and cold. It was so wet cold. You sure must have cold weather up north. I bet them boys up at Rockford they feel cold sometimes. I heard some froze their ears up there. I heard they have to sleep out in the trenches in that cold weather. In one ways it's nicer up there, they go home for Christmas. Some went home from here too. I don't think that I could of got one. We ain't here long enough yet. Maybe I could, but it isn't worth while they only give us privates 4 days. It takes 32 hours to go, 32 back. Then I would had one day. Some went home on a ten day pass. Those were Sergeants though. That is what I heard. They say we might get a 15 day pass after the hollydays. It is too far to go just for a day or two. The way the papers say the war will be over soon I hope so. I sure would be glad. This wouldn't be so bad as long as we don't have to go across. Have to make the best of it. Two fellows went home this week. They got a discharge, I guess they are home by this time. One had a broken ankle and the other one had a sore leg I guess. He comes from Grayslake, he might go to see my parents he said. We have over three hundred men in our company now. One thing is nice about our company, we don't have to go guard. That sure is awful job. The way they say one fellow shot himself here this week in some other Co. I thank you very much for the package it got here in a good shape. This is all the news for this time. Will close with love to all. I am, as ever, Bernard
