Arguments Against Women's Suffrage

Not a Woman's Job

Many men and women didn't want women to vote. What were some of the main arguments against women's suffrage?

  1. Women did not need to vote: Every woman had atleast one man in her life - father, brother, husband - who could vote. His vote would automatically be in her best interest.
  2. Women were not qualified to vote: Women were good at talking care of the home, they were not used to paying attention to business or politics. They had not studied to the right subjects in school. It was bad for everyone to ask a woman to vote on things she did not understand.
  3. Women who voted would become too much like men: Women's traditional role was in the home, so if women stared voting, they might want to do other things men did. They may want to run for office, have jobs, or serve on juries.
