Souvenirs from Across the USA

Souvenirs from across the United States

Some souvenirs that were collected were a little bit silly! Take a look at these souvenir rocks collected by Oscar Weidner on a trip to Yankton, South Dakota.

Oscar referred to these rocks as "Honeymoon Rocks". While we don't know for sure why Oscar was in Yankton around 1935, it is possible it was for actually for his honeymoon! He married Clara Theis in 1937.

What is in Yankton, South Dakota?

The explorers Lewis and Clark visited Yankton in 1804, as they made their way westward. Before European settlers moved to the area the 1850s and 1860s, it was occupied by the Yankton Sioux Tribe. There are many historic buildings from the 1800s that are still preserved in Yankton.

There are also lots of fossils in South Dakota and around Yankton.  This may have been the reason behind Oscar's visit, since he brought back so many to Buffalo Grove as souvenirs!
